Following Christ: Sermon Outline

Matthew 8:16-27

Background: Jesus Christ has just entered Capernaum, His home away from Nazareth.

  1. Roman Garrison stationed here: Jesus healed the Centurion's servant (Gentile)
  2. Peter's Mother-In-Law healed
  3. The word spread: Isaiah's Prophet, here healing! Result, thousands come.
Matthew 8:16-17 "When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with [his] word, and healed all that were sick: [17] That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare [our] sicknesses.
Hebrews 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Isaiah 53:4-7 "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.   He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth."

[18] Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
Matthew 19:2  "And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there."

Matthew 26:55  "In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me."

[19] And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.  [20] And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air [have] nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay [his] head.
John 15:20  "Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also."

Matthew 5:10-12 "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."

[21] And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  [22] But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
Luke 14:26  "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."

Matthew 26:39  "And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."

[23] And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.  [24] And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.  [25] And his disciples came to [him], and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.  [26] And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
NEW LIFE OVER DEATH: Isaiah 43:18-19 "Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.   Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."

NEW LOVE OVER HATRED: 1 John 2:8-11 "Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.   But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes."

NEW POWER OVER WEAKNESSES: 2 Peter 1:3-4 "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:   Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

Philippians 4:13  "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

[27] But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!"

1 Thessalonians 5:24  "Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it."
