Biblical Meditation

The Bible is the Christian's textbook, presenting a systematic study of our Creator and His plans for mankind. The Bible is a practical guide to Christian living. If we study it's precepts and strive to live our lives by them, then we are better equipped to serve our Maker while in this world.

Meditation on God's Word strengthens the Christian so he or she can live the life God intended.

Psalms 1:1-3 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

Psalms 119:97-104  "MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.  I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way."

Joshua 1: 5-9 "There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

You can only gain spiritual insight from the Word of God by living it. Just reading it alone without application is ineffective.

1 Timothy 4:15-16 "Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

The Christian is commanded to meditate on the teachings of the Scripture. What is meditation? The original language definitions of "meditate" are threefold. The word means:
  1. To take diligent care for or about something.
  2. To practice as a result of planning.
  3. To reflect deeply upon a great truth taught.
As Christians we therefore meditate on the Scriptures by:
  1. First, understand that we are reading God's Word, not just a human written textbook. Once we understand that the Creator of all wrote this Book we will approach it with the right frame of mind. The Scriptures should mean more to us than a simple book. It is a sacred object, a Divine set of instructions.
  2. Second, we must seek to apply or practice what we read in the Book. Applying the truths of Scripture in our lives make the words come alive, and better the quality of our lives.
  3. Third, we should seek to understand the "whys" of what God has commanded us to do. Once we understand why God gives us certain direction we are more apt to follow the direction without a second thought. Understanding the "whys" only comes by diligent study of God's Scripture on a daily basis. If you have time to watch television 4 hours a day, you certainly have the time to read and study God's Word.
