Eschatology Studies From A Christian Perspective
WILL WE KNOW
ONE ANOTHER

IN HEAVEN?

The most frequently asked question I have heard over the past 24 years I've been in Christ is, "Will we know one another when we get to Heaven?". Though there is no scripture that specifically states we will look like we do now in our glorified bodies, there are numerous scriptures that seem to infer we will know one another in Heaven. Let's look at a few of these scriptures, and see if you agree with me:

The Case of the Rich Man and Lazarus

Luke 16:22-25 "And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented."

In the Gospel of Luke Jesus recounted the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. This story is, to all appearances, an actual event that happened in eternity. Most Biblical scholars do not regard this telling to be a parable. In all His parables, Jesus never used names for the characters in the illustration. He always used terms like, "there was a certain man", or "the good steward", or "there was an evil king". In the parables (which are fictitious stories told to illustrate a doctrinal point) Jesus always used non-descript titles for the characters. In this tale, however, He used actual names. This leads me to believe that the story was something Jesus in His Deity saw, and recounted, to teach us several facts about the afterlife:

  1. Jesus taught that there is no waiting period after death. We are immediately transferred to our eternal homes, be it Heaven or Hell, after we leave this life.
  2. Jesus taught that Hell is a place of eternal punishment, and that Heaven is a place of peace and comfort for the Saints.
  3. He also taught that there is no second chance for redemption after we leave this life. There is a great gulf (wall) fixed between Heaven and Hell to keep the saved and the unsaved in their assigned places.
  4. And most interesting, Jesus taught that there was immediate recognition between Abraham, Lazarus, and the rich man.
This fourth point is very interesting when you think about it. The rich man had seem Lazarus every day outside of his door while on earth, so it's natural that he recognize Lazarus when they both reached eternity. In his glorified state Lazarus may have retained the same features that he had while on earth. But how did the rich man recognize Abraham, who went to Glory nearly 2000 years before the wicked man entered Hell? I believe that this recognition illustrates that we will have an intuitive knowledge of who the Saints are in Heaven. There's no way that the rich man could have seen Abraham, nor had any idea what he looked like while he walked the earth. Cameras weren't invented, and art (at least back in Abraham's time) was sketchy at best. To my knowledge no archeologist has ever discovered a viable likeness of Abraham. There is, I believe, an intuitive understanding of "who's who" for everyone (even the lost) in eternity.

The Case of Jesus' Rebuke to the Pharisees

Luke 13:27-28 "But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

Here we see another verse that seems to teach an intuitive recognition of all those who enter eternity. Jesus, in rebuking the Pharisees, warns them that they shall regret their actions when they shall see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in Heaven, and they themselves enter Hell. The word Jesus used for SEE is the Greek OPTOMAI, which means "to see with the eyes, to recognize by sight". Those these evil men had never actually seen these patriarchs alive on earth (all died and were buried long before this time), in eternity it seems that the veil is lifted from all eyes so that we can see and recognize the Saints. This certainly doesn't imply that there is no change between our glorified, resurrected bodies, and the pitiful shells we cling to while on this old earth. Paul taught us that there is indeed a distinct difference between our natural and spiritual bodies:

1 Corinthians 15:35-38 "But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body."

1 Corinthians 15:42-44 "So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body."

1 Corinthians 15:49 "And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly."

There is definitely a radical structural change between our earthly and Heavenly bodies. A seed of corn is dead before it's planting, and looks nothing like the plant it produces. However, the plant produced from the dead corn produces more corn, as alike in texture and flavor as that dead seed was while it lived.

In verse 49 we see that our glorified bodies will bear the image of the Heavenly, in contrast to what our bodies look like now. IMAGE is the Greek word EIKON, which means "a representation or resemblance of". There will be some change in our appearance, but how radical that change will be is (to my mind) as of yet, unknown.

Luke 20:34-36 "And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."

Jesus taught that in our glorified state, all previous earthly ties (such as marriage) are voided. We who are saved will be a part of the Bride of Christ. Though I believe you will know who your earthly mate was, and will rejoice in his (or her) presence, all previous ties, sexual or otherwise, will be abandoned in that glorified state.

The Case of the Risen Christ

Jesus in His resurrection established four certainties in the Christian Faith:
  1. The fact that His sacrifice was acceptable to God the Father:
    1. Acts 5:30-32 "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him."
    2. Acts 17:2-3 "And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ."
    3. Acts 17:31 "Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."
    4. Hebrews 13:20 " Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,"
    5. 1 Peter 1:3 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,"
    6. 1 Peter 1:21 "Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God."
  2. That the Christian Faith is viable, traceable, and true:
    1. Matthew 12:40 " For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
    2. Matthew 28:6-7 "He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you."
    3. Acts 1:3 " To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:"
      1. You can find the graves of Buddha, Mary Baker Eddy, Russell, Joseph Smith, and all their like. But you'll only find an empty grave where Jesus is no longer, for He is risen. That's all the proof I need.
  3. That our salvation is permanent, as permanent as was His resurrection:
    1. Romans 4:24-25 "But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification."
    2. Romans 5:10 " For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life."
    3. Ephesians 1:20 " Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,"
    4. 1 John 2:1-2 " My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world."
  4. And His resurrection showed Christ as a pattern for our resurrected bodies:
    1. Acts 26:23 " That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles."
    2. Romans 6:4-5 "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:"
If Christ is a pattern for our resurrected bodies (and I believe the Scripture clearly insinuates that He is), then we can learn a lot by studying Christ in His resurrected state. For instance:

John 20:24-27 "But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing."

Everyone remembers the Bible story of "Doubting Thomas", who wanted to see Jesus in the flesh before he'd believe the resurrection account. But rather than focus on Thomas, focus on the risen Christ for a moment. Jesus offered proofs that He was indeed Christ to Thomas by displaying the nail and spear scars on His resurrected body. Jesus obviously retained some of the features of His earthly body, even in His glorified state. But even more interesting is the fact that the disciples were in a locked room, hiding, and Jesus easily entered this room. The scripture doesn't say that anyone let Him in, but that "the doors being shut, and (He, Jesus) stood in the midst". This leads me to believe that, if Jesus is our pattern, then in our glorified states the normal limitations of our human bodies are superseded. We will no longer be bound by the locked door, restrained by the wall. Furthermore:

Mark 16:11-14 " And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen."

Jesus appeared in another form to two of His disciples, which leads me to believe that the resurrected body is malleable or controllable in it's likeness by the user. But I'm not talking something alien, or monstrous, for we also read:

Luke 24:36-43 "And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them."

Jesus so suddenly appeared before the disciples that they were startled, believing they were seeing a ghost. The glorified body that Jesus possesses is not limited by space or time, though by His very words His body possessed a likeness to flesh and bones. You could touch Jesus, for He said: "it is I myself: handle me, and see". Jesus had a type of substance, for He said "a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have". And though He had no need of sustenance to survive in His glorified state, Jesus ate food while His disciples looked on.

In Conclusion

Though we do not know for a certainty what our resurrected bodies will be like, we do know (since we will be patterned after our Savior) that some of the physical characteristics of our glorified bodies will be similar to our earthly bodies, whereas other characteristics will be supernatural. We can also infer from numerous scriptures that we will know one another when we get to Heaven. Will we know our loved ones who rejected Christ, and who are residing in Hell? I also believe we will. Will this tarnish our peace in Heaven? No, because when we see Him, we will be like Him. We will understand all things, and:

Revelation 7:17 " For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

Revelation 21:4 "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."
