TITUS CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION TO THIS STUDY

The purpose of this study work is to give you the original Greek language words and definitions for all the key words in this selected Bible text. This work does not make any effort to interpret the text in question, though some interpretation may occur naturally as a result of the study. The English translation used is the King James (Authorized) Version, not because it is the best translation available, but because I just plain prefer it for study!

All Scripture text will be presented in normal cased lettering, and all notes within the text will be in TRUE TYPE FONT, as shown. This (I hope) will allow you to avoid confusion between God's Word and my notes. As I update this website, I will continue to embellish the text so that anyone using NETSCAPE or MSIE 3.0 or higher will be able to read the document easier. Greek tenses are abbreviated as follows:

If you discover obvious errors (as I am human, and do make mistakes), please let me know. Do not contact me to argue about the doctrinal differences that you may have with my teaching. I do not argue Theology with anyone, so all Legalists, cultists, and others with extremist views, please save your (and my) time. If you want to discuss your doctrinal differences, or share a viewpoint, please contact me at Didaskalos Ministries. I am not so arrogant as to think I know it all, or even 1% of what the scripture teaches.

Outline of Chapter One

Verses 1-4: Salutation

Verses 5-9: Appointment of Leadership

Verses 10-16: Necessity of Good Leadership

1:1

Paul, (PAULOS. Romans were given three names, much like our English first, middle, and last names. Though Saul was born a Jew he had applied for and received Roman citizenship. After this he received three names. The "prinomen" was the name given to the child at birth. The prinomen of the Apostle was SAULOS, or Saul. The "nomen" was the name of the tribe or clan that the citizen belonged to, and Saul belonged to the tribe of Benjamin. His nomen was BENJAMINOS. The "cognomen" was the family name, the paternal lineage that the child came out of. The Apostle's cognomen was PAULOS, or Paul. Since the Apostle's Father was a Roman, he usually used his cognomen when addressing the Gentile Churches, hence PAUL)

which is after (KATA = ACCORDING TO THE NORM OR STANDARD OF)

godliness; (SEE 2 CORINTHIANS 7.13-16. THIS EPISTLE WAS WRITTEN AROUND 66-67 AD FROM METROPOLIS, JUST PRIOR TO PAUL'S ARREST. THE PURPOSE OF THIS EPISTLE IS TO TELL TITUS HOW TO ESTABLISH THE CHURCH IN CRETE)

I thee in Crete, (PAUL LEFT TITUS IN CRETE AT THE END OF HIS FOURTH MISSIONARY JOURNEY. CRETE WAS THE MOST FAMOUS ISLAND OF THE ANCIENT WORLD, THE SEAT OF MINOAN CIVILIZATION. IT WAS A MOUNTAINOUS ISLAND ON THE SOUTH END OF THE AEGEAN SEA, 156 MILES LONG. CRETIANS WERE IN JERUSALEM ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST [ACTS 2.11], AND PAUL'S VISIT HERE WAS RECORDED IN ACTS 21.7)

elders (PRESBUTEROS = OLD MEN, ELDERS. ONE OF THE TITLES USED FOR THE PASTOR OF A CHURCH. THIS TITLE EMPHASIZES THAT THE PASTOR MUST BE MATURE AS A BELIEVER TO HOLD A CHURCH)

in every city, (KATA + POLIS = ACCORDING TO THE STANDARD OF EVERY CITY. Some cities, being large, required more local Churches than others. Therefore they would need more Elders. Titus was to make sure each city in Crete got enough local Churches so as to minister to all of the Christians there)

But a lover of hospitality, (PHILOZENOS = A LOVER OF STRANGERS)

1:12

One of themselves, [even] a prophet of their own, (EPIMENIADES, A FAMOUS POET OF CRETE, IS QUOTED HERE. God often uses non-inspired writings in His inspired Bible if the non-inspired writings are true.)

all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled (MEAINO, PERF PAS PART = originally, in the ancient world sewage was dumped into the street from balconies.
