1 THESSALONIANS CHAPTER TWO
INTRODUCTION TO THIS STUDY

The purpose of this study work is to give you the original Greek language words and definitions for all the key words in this selected Bible text. This work does not make any effort to interpret the text in question, though some interpretation may occur naturally as a result of the study. The English translation used is the King James (Authorized) Version, not because it is the best translation available, but because I just plain prefer it for study!

All Scripture text will be presented in normal cased lettering, and all notes within the text will be in TRUE TYPE FONT, as shown. This (I hope) will allow you to avoid confusion between God's Word and my notes. As I update this website, I will continue to embellish the text so that anyone using NETSCAPE or MSIE 3.0 or higher will be able to read the document easier. Greek tenses are abbreviated as follows:

If you discover obvious errors (as I am human, and do make mistakes), please let me know. Do not contact me to argue about the doctrinal differences that you may have with my teaching. I do not argue Theology with anyone, so all Legalists, cultists, and others with extremist views, please save your (and my) time. If you want to discuss your doctrinal differences, or share a viewpoint, please contact me at Didaskalos Ministries. I am not so arrogant as to think I know it all, or even 1% of what the scripture teaches.

1 Thessalonians 2:1

For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:

1 Thessalonians 2:2

But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.

1 Thessalonians 2:3

For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:

1 Thessalonians 2:4

But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

1 Thessalonians 2:5

For neither at any time used (Literally = did we come with)

we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:

Translator's Note: There was no ulterior motive in Paul's witnessing, like a desire for money. The unbeliever can sense ulterior motives in the erroneous minister, and discount the Gospel message because of this. This is why many of the "televangelist" shows are so wrong, for they drive more from the Gospel with their false motivation than they draw to it.

1 Thessalonians 2:6

Nor of men sought (ZETEO Pr Linear Action = kept on seeking)

we glory, (DOXA = glory. They weren't in the Gospel ministry seeking personal power)

neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 2:7

But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse (TROPHOS Literally = a nursing mother)

cherisheth (THALPO Present Tense, linear duration = keeps on caring and feeding)

her children:

1 Thessalonians 2:8

So being affectionately desirous (HIMEIROMAI Present Active Part = having an intense love)

of you, we were willing to have imparted (METADIDOMAI Aorist Act Infin = to share. A true expression of Divine love is to share the truths of Scripture with other believers)

unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

1 Thessalonians 2:9

For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: (MOCHTHOS Refers to the action of giving birth to a child, working in pain)

for laboring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

1 Thessalonians 2:10

Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: (PISTEUO Pr Ac Part = that keep on believing)

1 Thessalonians 2:11

As ye know how we exhorted (PARAKALEO Pr Ac Part = to call someone to your side so as to help them)

and comforted (PARAMUTHEOMAI Pr Ac Part = to cheer up, soothe, orient someone to a new atmosphere)

and charged (MASTIGOO Pr Ac Part = to scourge, impart an order, decree, incite to)

every one of you, as a father doth his children,

1 Thessalonians 2:12

That ye would walk (PERIPATEO Pr Ac Infin = keep on walking)

Walking For God

Walk in the Spirit (Gal 5.16)
Walk In Faith (2 Cor 5.7)
Walk In Love (Eph 5.2)
Walk In Wisdom (Col 4.5)
Walk In The Light (1 Jo 1.7)
Walk Worthy of our Vocation (Eph 4.1)

worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

1 Thessalonians 2:13

For this cause also thank (EUCHARISTEO Pr Linear Action = we keep on thanking)

we God without ceasing, because, when ye received (PARALAMBANO Ao Ac Part = you welcomed it, having received)

the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is (EIMI, Present Linear = it keeps on being)

in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

1 Thessalonians 2:14

For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: (The religious crowd in Jerusalem was persecuting the Christians in Thessalonica)

1 Thessalonians 2:15

Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

1 Thessalonians 2:16

Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up (ANAPLEROSAI = to fill up a cup)

their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

1 Thessalonians 2:17

But we, brethren, being taken (APORPHANISTHANTAS Aor Participle = having been bereaved)

from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavored the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.

1 Thessalonians 2:18

Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

1 Thessalonians 2:19

For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye (There's joy in meeting someone you led to the Lord in Heaven)

in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

1 Thessalonians 2:20

For ye are our glory and joy.
