The purpose of this study work is to give you the original Greek language words and definitions for all the key words in this selected Bible text. This work does not make any effort to interpret the text in question, though some interpretation may occur naturally as a result of the study. The English translation used is the King James (Authorized) Version, not because it is the best translation available, but because I just plain prefer it for study!
All Scripture text will be presented in normal cased lettering, and all notes within the text will be in TRUE TYPE FONT, as shown. This (I hope) will allow you to avoid confusion between God's Word and my notes. As I update this website, I will continue to embellish the text so that anyone using NETSCAPE or MSIE 3.0 or higher will be able to read the document easier. Greek tenses are abbreviated as follows:
Then (TOTE = and so then)
was Jesus led up (ANAGO, Aor Pas Ind = caused to ascend)
of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted (PEIRAZO = put to the test to determine the strength of)
of the devil.

he was afterward an hungred. (PEINAO = intensely hungry)
Matthew 4:3
And when the tempter (PEIRAZON, Pres Act Part = the one who continually tempts)
came (PROSERCHOMAI = came face to face with)

bread.

and said, It is written, (GRAPHO, Perfect = written in the past with results that last into the future)
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth (EKPOREUOMENO = Pres Ac Part = keeps on coming out)
out of the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:5
Then (TOTE = And so then)
the devil taketh him up (PARALAMBANO = to take alongside of)
into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, (Overlooking the Valley of Kedron, a 600 foot drop, this was "Herod's Porch")
Matthew 4:6
And saith unto him, If (EAN, first class condition = If, and it's true)
thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: (BALE SEAUTON KATO, Aor Ac Imper = you jump!)
for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time (These words were added by Satan, he doesn't quote pure Scripture but adds to it as it suits his purpose. Note also that Jesus doesn't argue the point, just quotes Scripture back at Satan)
thou dash thy foot against a stone. Psalm 91.11-12
Matthew 4:7
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt (EKPEIRAZO = to tempt)
the Lord thy God. Deuteronomy 6.16

Then (TOTE = and so then)
the devil leaveth (APHIEMI = ran away, retreated, deserted)
him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Matthew 4:12
Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
Matthew 4:13

Matthew 4:14
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
Matthew 4:15
The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

the gospel of the kingdom, and healing (THERAPEUON, Present Linear = continually healing. Jesus immersed Himself in His earthly ministry)
all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
Matthew 4:24
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
Matthew 4:25
And there followed him great multitudes of people from
Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from
beyond Jordan.

Galilee was primarily Gentile, Decapolis primarily Greek, Jerusalem primarily Jewish, and beyond Jordan were the Arabs. Jesus made sure His ministry was available to all people, regardless of race. Our Churches should follow the same example. |
