I N T R O D U C T I O N
The purpose of this study work is to give you the original Greek language words and definitions for all the key words in this selected Bible text. This work does not make any effort to interpret the text in question, though some interpretation may occur naturally as a result of the study. The English translation used is the King James (Authorized) Version, not because it is the best translation available, but because I just plain prefer it for study!
All Scripture text will be presented in normal cased lettering, and all notes within the text will be in TRUE TYPE FONT, as shown. This (I hope) will allow you to avoid confusion between God's Word and my notes. As I update this website, I will continue to embellish the text so that anyone using NETSCAPE or MSIE 3.0 or higher will be able to read the document easier. Greek tenses are abbreviated as follows:
2 Timothy 2:14-16
14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
15 Study (spoudazo, study earnestly, diligently, with all concentration, with all effort)
to shew thyself approved (dokimos, tried and tested, with the result that it has been shown sound or genuine)
unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, (anepaischuntos, has no need to be ashamed)
rightly dividing (orthotomeo, to make a straight cut through, to dissect correctly, by extension = to exegete and expound correctly)
the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2 Timothy 3.1-7
1 This know (ginosko, Pres Act Imperative = keep on possessing as absolute knowledge, experiential knowledge)
also, that in the last days perilous (chalepos, difficult)
times (chronos, periods of chronological time, history)
shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, (alazon, braggarts)
proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, (acharistos, ungrateful, having ingratitude because that person has no moral or spiritual basis. This can be illustrated in our present Church age where people often pull up to the Church like it's a buffet table, stay while it suits them, then leave to hop to another buffet table somewhere else. In our Church I have seen the assembly give money and time to members who lost children or jobs; in one instance a family was maintained at no cost at the Pastor's house - and these members, having enjoyed the good will of the assembly, now openly have moved to other buffet tables. In another instance the Church paid to bury the deceased child of a member, and now the member refuses to attend assembly because of an alleged offense another member caused. Yet again a man, allegedly Christian, has avoided the Church for ten years though the present Pastor called him to the front of the Church and, on bended knee, begged his forgiveness for trespasses either real or imagined. The acharistos attitude flows through our Churches today like poison through the blood stream - as prophesied by our Lord)
unholy,
3 Without natural affection, (astorgos, to be void of any normal familial love, sexual orientation, or love. In other words, someone who follows after an alternate lifestyle)
truce breakers, (aspondos, malicious, one who can never be satisfied and thus breaks covenant. We see this in Church after Church where alleged believers "join with" an assembly in covenant, then stop coming to Church. This is in fact the action of a liar - and liars shall not enter into God's Kingdom - see Revelation 21.8)
false accusers, (diabolos, slanderer, devil, treacherous informer)
incontinent, (akrates, powerless, without self control)
fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, (propetes, thoughtless, rash, headlong)
high-minded, (tuphoo, Perf Pas Part = to have a head full of smoke)
lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Isaiah 59.9-19
5 Having a form (morphosis, system of change, metamorphosis)
of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (Pres Mid Imperative, apotrepo, keep on avoiding, keep on separating from)
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, (refers to the local Church. In the early Church services were held from house to house in order to prevent the all too common Roman persecution)
and lead captive (aichmaloteuo, to capture by deception)
silly women laden (soreuo, heaped up with)
with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever (pantote, at all times)
learning, (manthano, to learn as a disciple, be a disciple of)
and never able to come to the knowledge (epignosis, soul knowledge, knowledge applied and learned)
of the truth. (aletheia, absolute truth. Refers to God's Word, applied in the life of the believer)
2 Timothy 4.5-8
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
6 For I am now ready (spendo, spent, poured out as a libation, a sacrifice before God) to be offered,
and the time (kairos, chronological time, era)
of my departure (analusis, a variety of uses in ancient literature: to break camp, to set sail, to unhook the oxen to give them grain, to unravel a mystery, to release a prisoner. In essence, to free someone to something better)
is at hand. (ephistemi, Perf Act = to be right here)
7 I have fought a good (kalos = good in quality, profitable, honorable)
fight, I have finished my course, (dromos, athletic course, race track)
I have kept the faith:
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
