Paul's Epistle To The Philippians (1)
 

The purpose of this study work is to give you the original Greek language words and definitions for all the key words in this selected Bible text. This work does not make any effort to interpret the text in question, though some interpretation may occur naturally as a result of the study. The English translation used is the King James (Authorized) Version, not because it is the best translation available, but because I just plain prefer it for study!

All Scripture text will be presented in normal cased lettering, and all notes within the text will be in TRUE TYPE FONT, as shown. This (I hope) will allow you to avoid confusion between God's Word and my notes. As I update this website, I will continue to embellish the text so that anyone using NETSCAPE or MSIE 3.0 or higher will be able to read the document easier. Greek tenses are abbreviated as follows:

  • GREEK TENSES:
    • PR= Present Tense: Shows action in present time. When used with Active Voice, and Indicative Mood, often shows linear or continuing action.
    • AO= Aorist Tense : Simple, undefined action. The time of the action is undefined, except in the indicative mood.
    • FUT= Future Tense : Shows action of the verb as defined in the future.
    • PER= Perfect Tense: The action was completed in the past, but has lasting and continuing results into the future.
    • IMP= Imperfect Tense: Used only in the indicative mood, and refers to continuous or linear action in past time. As in "I was having".
    • PLPF= Pluperfect Tense: The action was completed in the past, with continuing results in the past.
  • GREEK CASES:
    • GEN= Genitive Case: Usually indicates possession, though it can denote source of the action.
    • INST = Instrumental Case: Usually denotes action on the object of the verb.
    • DAT= Dative Case
    • NOM= Nominative Case
    • ACC= Accusative
      • PL= Plural
      • SG= Singular
  • GREEK VOICES:
    • AC= Active Voice: Action was completed by the subject of the verb.
    • PAS= Passive Voice: The subject receives the action of the verb.
    • MID= Middle Voice: The subject acts in some way upon itself or to itself.
  • GREEK MOODS:
    • IND= Indicative Mood : Makes an assertion of fact, and is used with all Greek tenses. Example: they will go, she saw.
    • OPT= Optative Mood: Rarely used, it usually expresses a wish or desire.
    • IMP= Imperative Mood: A command to do something.
    • SUBJ= Subjective Mood: Makes an assertion about which there is some doubt, uncertainty, or indefiniteness.
  • OTHER ABBREVIATIONS:
    • PART= Participle : A verbal adjective, such as "having gone, receiving the gift".
    • ABL= Ablative of source: When something is out of something. Example, The Spirit out of God.
    • INF= Infinitive: A verbal noun, examples = to see, to go, to throw.

Philippians 1:1
Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Philippians 1:2
Grace [be] unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and [from] the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:3
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

Philippians 1:4
Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

Philippians 1:5
For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

Philippians 1:6
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ:

Philippians 1:7
Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

Philippians 1:8
For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:9
And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and [in] all judgment;

Philippians 1:10
That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ;

Philippians 1:11
Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Philippians 1:12
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things [which happened] unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

Philippians 1:13
So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other [places];

Philippians 1:14
And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Philippians 1:15
Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

Philippians 1:17
But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.

Philippians 1:18
What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

Philippians 1:19

For I know (OIDA, Perf used as Pres = have an absolute knowledge)

that this shall turn to (APOBAINO, Fut Mid Ind = shall result in)

my salvation (EIS SOTERIA = the deliverance, salvation)

through your prayer, (DIA + Genitive DEESIS = by means of your intercessory prayer)

and the supply (EPICHOREGIA = oversupply of your needs)

of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

Philippians 1:20

According to (KATA = according to the norm or standard of)

my earnest expectation (APOKARADOKIA, triple compound noun = to watch with your head stretched forward, intensely concentrate on)

and [my] hope, (ELPIS = confidence)

that in nothing (EN + locative OUDIES = the the sphere of nothing)

I shall be ashamed, (AISCHUNOMAI, Fut Pas Ind = to be disgraced or put to shame)

but [that] with all boldness, as always, (HOS PANTOTE, as at all times)

[so] now also Christ shall be magnified (MEGALUNO, Fut Pas Ind = shall be magnified, exalted, glorified)

in my body, (SOMA = body)

whether [it be] by life, (DIA + genitive ZOA = through the process of my life)

or by death. (DIA + genitive THANATOS = through the process of my death)

Philippians 1:21

For to me (Proleptic Emphatic Position, dative of advantage. This is to my advantage)

to live (ZAO, Pres Act Infin = to keep on living)

[is] Christ, and to die (APOTHNESKO, Aor Act Infin = to be about to die)

[is] gain. (KERDOS = personal gain)

Philippians 1:22
But if I live in the flesh, this [is] the fruit of my labor: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

Philippians 1:23
For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

Philippians 1:24
Nevertheless to abide in the flesh [is] more needful for you.

Philippians 1:25
And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

Philippians 1:26

That your rejoicing (KAIKEMA = boasting)

may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

Philippians 1:27

Only (MONON = only)

let your conversation (POLITEUO, Pres Mid Imperative = action as a citizen, duty as a citizen {of Heaven})

be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come (ERCHOMAI, Aor Act Part = make a personal visit)

and see (HORAO, Aor Act Part = have a panoramic view of, make a public appearance {to teach or preach})

you, or else be absent, (APEIMI, Pres Act Part = to be absent from. Paul was going to visit Rome, Spain, Ephesus, and several other areas prior to visiting Philippi)

I may hear (AKOUO, dramatic Pres = hear at any time)

of your affairs, that ye stand fast (STEKO, Pres Act Ind = be completely stabilized)

in one spirit, (EN + locative HEIS PNEUMA = in the sphere of one Spirit)

with one mind (EN + locative HEIS PSUCHE = in the sphere of One Soul)

striving together (SUNATHLEO, Pres Act Part = to cooperate vigorously toward a goal)

for the faith (PISTIS, Dative = for the doctrine/ faith)

of the gospel;

Philippians 1:28

And in nothing (EN + MEDEIS, locative = in the sphere of not one thing)

terrified (PTURO, Pres Pas Part = panic stricken, unreasonable fear)

by your adversaries: (HUPO ANTIKEMAI = to be dominated by your enemies. Refers to the fallen angels)

which is to them an evident token (EUDEIZIS = a public proof or evidence)

of perdition, (APOLEIA, to be neutralized or a casualty. Fear neutralizes us from service)

but to you of salvation, (SOTERIA, genitive = deliverance, salvation)

and that of (APO = from the ultimate source of God)

God.

Seven "fear nots" from God:
1. God promises blessing in life's journey (Gen 26.24; Num 21.34; Judg 6.23)
2. God promises supply in famine (1 Kings 17.13)
3. God promises protection in times of peril (2 Kings 6.16)
4. God promises strength in weakness (Isaiah 41.10)
5. God promises companionship in trial (Isaiah 43.1-3)
6. God promises intimate care for you (Matthew 10.30-31)
7. God promises life beyond death (Revelation 1.17-18)

Philippians 1:29

For unto you it is given (Aor Pas Ind CHARIZOMAI, has been freely given, given through grace)

in the behalf (HUPER, in substitution for)

of Christ, not only to believe (PISTEUO, Dramatic Pres = saved once and for all with continuing results)

on (EIS, directional preposition = with reference to)

him, but also to suffer (PASCHO, Pres Act Infin = suffered intensely)

for his sake;

Philippians 1:30

Having the same conflict (AGON = strongest word for conflict in NT. Used of contestants who battle to the death. Paul suffered to the death for his faith)

which ye saw in me, and now hear [to be] in me.
