INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study work is to give you the original Greek language words and definitions for all the key words in this selected Bible text. This work does not make any effort to interpret the text in question, though some interpretation may occur naturally as a result of the study. The English translation used is the King James (Authorized) Version, not because it is the best translation available, but because I just plain prefer it for study!

All Scripture text will be presented in normal cased lettering, and all notes within the text will be in TRUE TYPE FONT, as shown. This (I hope) will allow you to avoid confusion between God's Word and my notes. As I update this website, I will continue to embellish the text so that anyone using NETSCAPE or MSIE 3.0 or higher will be able to read the document easier. Greek tenses are abbreviated as follows:

If you discover obvious errors (as I am human, and do make mistakes), please let me know. Do not contact me to argue about the doctrinal differences that you may have with my teaching. 2 Corinthians 1

21  Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
 

22  Who hath also sealed (sphragizo, to set a mark upon, impress, seal or stamp so as to identify as one's property)

us, and given the earnest (arrhabon, money given as a pledge toward what is owed, earnest money)

of the Spirit in our hearts.
 

2 Corinthians 5

1  For we know (oida, know by experience)

that if our earthly (epigeios, on the earth, mortal)

house (oikia, shelter. Refers to the human body)

of this tabernacle were dissolved, (kataluo, Aor Pas Subjunctive = untied, nullified, unharnessed, released according to a norm or standard)

we have (echo, Present Tense = keep on having and holding)

a building of God, an house not made with hands, (acheiropoietos, unmanufactured, not made with human hands. Refers to our heavenly bodies that God prepares for us)

eternal in the heavens.
 

2  For in this we groan, (stenazo, Pres Act Ind = constantly sigh in longing for)

earnestly desiring (epipotheo, Present Tense, longing for something to be near that is not present)

to be clothed upon (ependuomai, invest upon oneself, be clothed with)

with our house (oiketerion, the place in the house that is lived in. Sense = that place which will make us happy, that we'll be at home in)

which is from heaven:
 

3  If so be that being clothed (ependuo = to put on outer garments)

we shall not be found naked.
 

4  For we that are (eimi, Pres Act Part = keep on being)

in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: (bareo, to be weighed down)

not for that we would be (thelo, desire to be)

unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality (thnetos, liable to die, susceptible to death)

might be swallowed up of (hupo = under)

life.
 

5  Now he that hath wrought (katergazomai, Aor Act = something constructed on the inside that becomes evident on the outside)

us for the (eis, for the purpose of)

selfsame thing is God, who also hath given (didomi, Aor Act = given in a point of time)

unto us the earnest (arrhabon, down payment, earnest money)

of the Spirit.
 

6  Therefore we are always confident, (tharreo, Pres Act Part = habitually have confident courage in)

knowing that, (eido, Perfect Tense = knowing)

whilst we are at home (endemeo, in our home)

in the body, we are absent (ekdemeo, away from home)

from (apo = from the ultimate source of)

the Lord:
 

7  (For we walk (peripateo, Pres Act Ind = habitually walk)

by faith, (dia + genitive of pistis = through faith)

not by sight:) (dia + genitive of eidos = through external appearances)
 

8  We are confident, I say, and willing (eudokeo, Present tense = to habitually take mental delight in)

rather to be absent (ekdemeo, away from home)

from the body, and to be present (endemeo, at home with)

with (pros + Accusative = face to face with God)

the Lord.
 

9  Wherefore we labor, (philotimeomai, consider it an honor)

that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
 

14  For the love of Christ constraineth (sunecho, to compress on every side, to put pressure on, to hold together)

us; because we thus judge, (krino, judge, distinguish, make a determination)

that if (First Class Condition = if, and it is true)

one died for all, then were all dead:
 

15  And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
 

18  And all things are of God, who hath reconciled (katallasso, to change or exchange coins of equal value, to change mutually, compound a difference)

us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
 

19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing (logizomai, to pass to one's account, impute)

their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
 

20  Now then we are ambassadors (presbeuo, are ambassadors, preachers)

for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
 

2 Corinthians 7

13  Therefore we were comforted (parakaleo, Perf Pas Ind = were comforted with the result that we remain comforted)

in (epi = on the basis of)

your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed (anapauo, Perf Pas Ind = to be refreshed again)

by (apo - from the ultimate source of)

you all.
 

14  For if I have boasted any thing to him of (huper = on behalf of)

you, I am not ashamed; (kataischuno, embarrassed, ashamed)

but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found (ginomai = is become)

a truth.
 

15  And his inward affection (splagchnon, bowels or entrails, by extension = loyalty or emotional support)

is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth (anamimnesko, to remember again and again, recall to memory repeatedly)

the obedience (hupakoe, respect for authority)

of you all, how with fear and trembling (meta phobos tromos, with fear and worshipful attitude)

ye received (dechomai, to embrace)

him.
 

16  I rejoice (chairo, Pres Act Ind = keep on rejoicing)

therefore that I have confidence (tharrheo, to have confidence or respect for)

in you in all things.
 
 

2 Corinthians 10

1 Now I Paul myself beseech (parakaleo, to call alongside so as to encourage)

you by (dia + Genitive = through)

the meekness (praiotes, an outward expression of an inward knowledge of Grace, meekness, opposite of pridefulness)

and gentleness (epieikeia, mildness)

of Christ, who in presence (prosopon, in personal appearance)

[am] base (tapeinos, groveling, little of soul)

among you, but being absent am bold (tharrheo, to have inner confidence)

toward you:
 

2 But I beseech (deomai, request, ask)

[you], that I may not be bold (tharrheo, Aor Act Infin = to get aggressive in a point of time)

when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think (logizomai, Pres Mid Ind = to come to a conclusion)

to be bold (tolmao, Aor Act Infin = an overt aggressiveness)

against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.(sarx + kata = by means of the flesh, according to the norms and standards of the old sin nature)
 

3 For though we walk in the flesh, (Preposition en + sarx = in the sphere of the flesh)

we do not war after the flesh:
 

4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, (sarkikos, fleshly, from human viewpoint or humanistic theories)

but mighty (dunatos, powerful)

through God to (pros + Accusative = face to face with)

the pulling down of strong holds;) (ochuroma, rock fort, castle)
 

5 Casting down (kathaireo, Pres Act Part = constantly casting down)

imaginations, (logismos, assumptions)

and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity (aichmalotizo, Pres Act Part = to make a captive, keep on capturing as hostages)

every thought to the obedience of Christ;
 

6 And having in a readiness (hetoimos, holding in readiness. A military term meaning to have a backup in reserve)

to revenge all disobedience, (ekdikeo parakoe, discipline all inattention. Reference to refusing to heed the Scriptural Word)

when (hoton = on the occasion of)

your obedience is fulfilled. (pleroo, Aor Pas Subjunctive = to fill up a deficiency in a point of time)
 

7 Do ye look (blepo, Pres Act Ind = keep on glancing at. Refers to superficial looking)

on things after (kata, according to the norm or standard of)

the outward appearance? If any man trust (peitho, Perf Act Ind = to have confidence with regard to)

to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, (touto logizomai, Pres Mid Imperative = to continue thinking till a result is reached. Literally = keep on thinking this to himself)

that, as he [is] Christ's, even so [are] we Christ's.
 

8 For though I should boast (kauchaomai, to express authority)

somewhat more of (literally = about our)

our authority, which the Lord hath given us for (eis = for the purpose of)

edification, and not for your destruction, (kathairesis, demolition)

I should not be ashamed:
 

9 That I may not seem (dokeo, appear to think)

as if I would terrify you by letters.
 

10 For [his] letters, say (phemi, an uttered condemnation)

they, [are] weighty and powerful; (ischuros, forcible, vehement)

but [his] bodily presence [is] weak, (astheneo, feeble, sickly, puny)

and [his] speech contemptible. (exoutheneo, out of nothing, of no account)
 

11 Let such an one think this, that, such as (of what type - literally)

we are in word by letters when we are absent, such [will we be] also in deed when we are present.
 

12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: (literally = we do not have the boldness or the nerve to judge ourselves worthy, or to compare ourselves favorably with them)

but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. (suniemi, to be sensible, have objective comprehension)
 

13 But we will not boast (kauchaomai, to brag)

of things without [our] measure, (ametros, not being measured)

but according to the measure of the rule (kanon, measure)

which God hath distributed (theos merizo, God has shared)

to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
 

14 For we stretch not (huperekteino, Pres Act Part = habitually overextending self)

ourselves beyond [our measure], as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in [preaching] the gospel of Christ:
 

15 Not boasting of things without [our] measure, [that is], of other men's labors; but having hope, (elpis, expectation, hope)

when your faith is increased, (auxano, Pres Pas Part = keep on growing)

that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
 

16 To preach the gospel in the [regions] beyond you, [and] not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
 

17 But he that glorieth, (kauchaomai, brags)

let him glory (kauchaomai, Pres Act Imperative = keep on bragging)

in the Lord.
 

18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
 
 

2 Corinthians 12
Sequel to Lystra incident where Paul was stoned to death. Compare to 2 Corinthians 11.25; Acts 14.19-20

1 It is not expedient (sumphero, advantageous)

for me doubtless to glory. (kauchaomai, boast, make a boastful testimony)

I will come to visions (optasia, a vision where God is revealed Himself)

and revelations of the (Genitive of source = from the source of)

Lord.
 

2 I knew (eido, to know as well as a part of self)

a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of (ektas = way outside of. Refers to death, state of death)

the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up (harpazo, Aor Pas Part = to be taken by force in a point of time)

to the third heaven.
 

3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
 

4 How that he was caught up into paradise, (paradeisos, garden of the King. Refers to Heaven)

and heard unspeakable (arrhetos, that which cannot be spoken)

words, (rhema, that which is spoken)

which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
 

5 Of such an one will I glory: (kauchaomai, boast, make a proud testimony)

yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities. (astheneia, helplessness, hopelessness, weakness)
 

6 For though (ean + subjunctive = if, maybe yes, maybe no)

I would desire (thelo, wish)

to glory, I shall not be (eimi + ouk = I shall never be)

a fool; (aphron, stupid, a non thinker, disoriented)

for I will say the truth: but [now] I forbear, (pheidomai, restrain self)

lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me [to be], or [that] he heareth of me.
 

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure (huperairomai, become arrogant through pride)

through the abundance of the revelations, there was given (didomi, Aor Pas Ind = given in a point of time)

to me a thorn (skolops, that which is pointed, splinter, thorn, stake)

in the flesh, the messenger (aggelos, angel)

of Satan to buffet (kolaphizo, rap with the fist, slug, hit)

me, lest I should be exalted above measure. (huperairomai, become arrogant through pride)
 

8 For (huper = on behalf of)

this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
 

9 And he said (ereo, Perfect tense = He said and it stood as true)

unto me, My grace (he charis mou, this grace of mine)

is sufficient (arkeo, Pres Act Ind = keeps on being satisfying)

for thee: for my strength (dunamis, inherent power)

is made perfect (teleioo, Pres Pas Ind = made complete so that it is ever complete)

in weakness. Most gladly (mallone hedista, with great pleasure to a higher degree)

therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon (episkenoo, to pitch a tent on, to dwell on as if it were home)

me.
 

10 Therefore I take pleasure (eudokeo, Pres Act = continually take delight in)

in infirmities, in reproaches, (hubris, in back biting, being a victim of unjust slander)

in necessities, (anagke, disasters)

in persecutions, (diogmos, religious persecution)

in distresses (stenochoria, to be squeezed in a place to small for you)

for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then (tote = at that moment)

am I (eimi, Pres Act = I keep on being)

strong. (dunatos, powerful, capable)
 

15  And I will very gladly (hedista, with the greatest of pleasure)

spend (dapanao, Fut Act Ind = expend money, energy, strength. This is the Pastor's attitude, that he will die, if need be, for his people - whether they appreciate it or not)

and be spent (dapanao, Fut Pas = to be expended to the point of destruction)

for you; (huper + Genitive psuche = on behalf of your souls)

though (ei = if, and you do)

the more abundantly I love you, (agapao, Present tense = I keep on loving)

the less (hetton, worse)

I be loved.
 

2 Corinthians 13

5  Examine (peirazo, Pres Act Imperative = keep on scrutinizing to determine good or bad)

yourselves, whether (Particle ei + indicative = if)

ye be (eimi, Present tense = you keep on being in)

in the faith; (ho pistis = in the faith, in the proper area of belief, in what is believed)

prove (dokimazo, Pres Act Imperative = keep on testing to determine good or evil in)

your own selves. Know ye not (epiginosko, Pres Act Imperative = to know for a fact)

your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, (en + instrumental = with you)

except ye be (Pres Act Indicative eimi = you keep on being)

reprobates? (adokimos, unable to stand the test, worthless, unfit, disqualified)
 

6  But I trust (elpizo, Present tense = keep on desiring)

that ye shall know (ginosko, Fut Mid Indicative = you shall know from experience)

that we are not reprobates. (Pres Ind eimi + ouk + adokimos = we do not continue as reprobates)
 

7  Now (Particle de = moreover)

I pray (euchomai, Pres Act Ind = keep on praying a wishful prayer)

to God (pros + Accus theos = face to face with the God)

that ye do no evil; (kakos = evil, that which is unrighteous)

not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do (poieo, Present tense = keep on doing)

that which is honest, (kalos, honorable)

though (Intensive de = even though)

we be as (Pres Act Subjunctive eimi = seem to be like)

reprobates.
 

8  For we can do nothing (Pres Act Ind dunamai + ouk = continue to have no power)

against the truth, (kata + aletheia, Genitive = against the true doctrine)

but for the truth. (huper + Genitive aletheia = on behalf of the true doctrine)
