The Doctrine of Pride
1. Pride is one of the seven deadly sins, i.e. it is a sin that leads the believer rapidly to the sin unto death: PROVERBS 6.16-17
yea, seven are an abomination (<- TOWEBAH THE WORST, DISGUSTING, ABHORRENT)
unto Him: A proud (<- RUWM = HAUGHTY, SELF-EXALTED)
look, (<- HAYIN = SOMETHING ON THE OUTSIDE REFLECTED BY SOMETHING ON THE INSIDE, OUTER APPEARANCE AS REFLECTED BY INNER ACTIONS)
a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;"
2. The fear of God in the believer precludes the exercise of arrogant pride in his life: PROVERBS 8.13
and arrogancy, (<- GAHAVAH = PRIDE AS EXPRESSED EXTERNALLY BY ONE'S APPEARANCE, APPAREL, OR CARRIAGE)
and the evil way, and the froward (<- TAHPUKAH = PERVERSE OR FRAUDULENT, SPEAKING LIES OR MALIGNING)
mouth do I hate."
3. Satan's call was caused by pride, so we can call him the Father of Pride, and his followers his unholy children: ISAIAH 14.12-16
son of the morning (<- LITERALLY = SON OF THE BRIGHTEST TIME OF THE DAY)
how art thou cut down to the ground, (<- IDIOMATIC FOR SATAN'S CASTING DOWN TO AND IMPRISONMENT ON THE EARTH)
which didst weaken the nations. (<- GOD INSTITUTED NATIONALISM TO GIVE MAN A CHANCE AT SURVIVAL. SATAN ATTEMPTS TO DESTROY NATIONALISM IN ORDER TO DESTROY GOD'S PLANS FOR MANKIND)
For thou hast said (<- AMAR, KAL PERFECT = HAD REASONED OUT)
in thine heart, I will ascend (<- ALAH, KAL IMPERFECT - ASCEND SO AS TO RULE)
into heaven, I will exalt (<- RUM, HIPHEL STEM = CAUSE SELF TO RULE)
my throne above the stars of God; (<- REFERS TO THE ANGELS. SEE JOB 38.7; JUDE 13; REV 12.3-4)
I will sit (<- SASHAB = TO SIT WITH GREAT BLESSING)
also upon the mount of the congregation (<- LITERALLY, THE MOUNT OF THE ASSEMBLY. REFERS TO THE PLACE WHERE THE JEWS ASSEMBLED TO WORSHIP GOD. SEE PSA 42.8)
in the sides of the north: I will ascend (<- ALAH = ASCEND SO AS TO RULE)
above the heights of the clouds; (REFERS TO THE DIVINE PRESENCE. SATAN WANTS THE VERY FUNCTION AND NATURE OF GOD. SEE EXO 16.10; 40.38; 1 KI 8.10; PSA 104.3; ISA 19.1; MAT 24.30; AC 1.9; REV 1.7)
I will be like (<- DAMAH, HIPHIEL IMPERFECT = CAUSE MYSELF TO BE LIKE)
the Most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down (<- JARADH, HAPHEL STEM - BE CAUSED TO BE CAST DOWN. REFERS TO THE FINAL CASTING OF SATAN OUT OF HEAVEN, SEE REV 20.10)
to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, (<- IDIOMATIC FOR LOOKING UPON WITH CONTEMPT AND RIDICULE)
and consider thee, saying, is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;"
4. Pride has it's source in Satan, and severely perverts the believer's walk; JAMES 3.1, 13-18
many masters, (<- POLLOI DIDASKALOI = MANY TEACHERS)
knowing (PER ACT PART OIDA = CONTINUALLY KNOWING)
that we shall receive (<- FUT MID IND LAMBANO = YOU YOURSELF SHALL RECEIVE)
the greater (<- MEGAS = GREATER, GREATEST)
condemnation. (<- KRIMA = EXECUTION OF JUDGMENT)
Who is a wise man (<- TIS SOPHOS = THE WISE ONE)
and endued with knowledge (EPISTEMON - EXPERT OR MASTER IN A SUBJECT OR KNOWLEDGE)
among you? Let him show out (AOR ACT IMPER DEIKNUMI = DISPLAY)
of a good conversation his works (<- TA ERGA = HIS PRODUCTION)
with meekness (<- EN PRAUTES = IN THE SPHERE OF HUMILITY)
of wisdom. (SOPHIA = DIVINE WISDOM)
But if (<- EI + IND MOOD = IF, AND YOU DO)
ye have (<- PRES ACT IND ECHO = YOU HAVE AND POSSESS)
bitter (<- PIKROS = SOUR)
envying (<- ZELOS - JEALOUSY)
and strife (<- ERITHEIA - LOOKING FOR A FIGHT, A FIGHTING AND PROVOKING NATURE)
in your hearts, glory not. (<- PRES MID IMPER + ME + KAUCHAOMAI - STOP BOASTING)
and lie not (<- PRES MID IMPERATIVE PSEUDO + ME = STOP LYING)
against the truth. (<- KATA ALEITHEI = AGAINST WHAT IS TRUE)
This wisdom (<- SOPHIA = A REFERENCE HERE TO FALSE DIVINE WISDOM INSTILLED BY SATAN)
descendeth (PRES ACT PART KATERCHOMAI = KEEPS ON COMING DOWN)
not (<- PRES ACT IND EIMI + OUK IS ABSOLUTELY NOT)
from above, (<- ANOTHEN = FROM THE PRESENCE OF GOD)
but is earthly, (<- EPIGEIOS = FROM THE EARTH)
sensual, (PSUCHIKOS = SOULISH)
devilish. (DAIMONDIODES = COMING FROM DEMONS)
For (<- ILLITIVE GAR - BECAUSE)
where (<- HOPOU = IN WHAT PLACE)
envying (<- ZELOS PRIDE)
and strife (<- ERITHEIA = SEEKING A FIGHT, CONTENTION)
is, there (<- EKEI = IN THAT PLACE)
confusion (<- AKATASTASIA = CONFUSION, INSTABILITY)
and every evil work. (LITERALLY, EVERY VILE PRACTICE)
But the wisdom that is from above (<- ANOTHEN FROM THE PRESENCE OF GOD)
is (PRES ACT IND EIMI = KEEPS ON BEING)
first pure, (AGNOS = PURE IN ESSENCE)
then peaceable, (<- EIRENIKOS = PRODUCING INNER BENEFITS)
gentle, and easy to be entreated, (<- EUPEITHES - EASY TO RECOGNIZE AS TEACHING)
full of mercy and good fruits, (<- REFERS TO DIVINE GOOD PRODUCTION)
without partiality and without hypocrisy."
5. Evil acts of perversion stem out of a prideful heart: PSALM 10.2-6, 11
in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices (<- MEZIMMAH = PLOTS, PLANS, PURPOSE, INTRIGUE, MISCHIEF)
that they have imagined. (<- CHASHAB = RECKON, THINK, PLAN, MAKE A JUDGMENT, IMAGINE)
For the wicked boasteth (HALAL = TO BE BRIGHT, SHINE IN, GLORIFY SELF IN)
of his heart's desire, and blesseth (BARAK = TO BEND THE KNEE DOWN TO, PRAISE, WORSHIP)
the covetous, (<- BATSA' = THOSE WHO CUT OFF, BREAK OFF, OR OTHERWISE GET UNRIGHTEOUS GAIN, ROB SO AS TO GAIN)
whom the Lord abhorreth. (<- NA'AT = TO REVILE, SCORN, OR REJECT, HOLD IN JUDGMENT)
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, ('APH = OUTWARD EXPRESSION OF THE NOSE OR FACE)
will not seek after God; God is not in all his thoughts. (<- MEZIMMAH = MEDITATION, PLANS, PURPOSES., DEVICES, PLOTS)
His ways (<- DEREK = WAY OF LIFE, PATHWAY, MANNER OF LIFE)
are always (ETH = CONSTANTLY, NOW)
grievous; (<- CHUWL = REEL OR WRITHE IN PAIN, CAUSE PAIN)
thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth (<- PUWACH = TO PUFF, BREATHE, BLOW, SYMBOLIC OF INCITING SEDITION)
at them. He hath said in his heart (<- LEB - HEART, CONTROLLER OF THE SOUL)
I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. (<- RAI = BAD IN QUALITY, EVIL, OR WICKED)
He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it."
6. Pride leads to destruction from the hand of God: PROVERBS 16.5, 18-19
to the Lord: though hand (YAD = POWER, STRENGTH, ASSISTANCE)
join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. (<- NAOAH = TO BE FREE FROM PUNISHMENT AND THUS GUILT).
Pride goeth before destruction, (SHEBER = WOUNDING FROM GOD, HURT, FRACTURE)
and a haughty spirit (<- RUWACH = BREATH OF THE NOSTRILS, SPIRIT. HERE REFERS TO AN ATTITUDE OF THE SOUL)
before a fall. Better it is to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. (ALSO SEE PSALM 12.3-4)"
7. Pride leads to fighting: PROVERBS 13.10
cometh contention: but with the well advised (YA'ATS = WELL PLANNED, THOUGHT OUT, RESOLVED)
is wisdom. (<- CHOKMAH = WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE)".
8. Pride leads to shame- PROVERBS 11.2, 12
cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. (<- CHOKMAH = WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, INTELLIGENT EXPERIENCE).
He that is void of wisdom (<- LEB = HEART, THE INNER MAIN CONTROLLER OF THE SOUL)
despiseth his neighbor: but a man ('IYSH = A MALE, MACHO MAN, MANLY MAN)
of understanding holdeth his peace."
9. Pride is specifically identified by God as sinful and worldly: PROVERBS 21.4, 24
of the wicked, (<- RASHA = MORALLY BAD, WRONG, LAWLESS)
is sin. (CHATTA'AH = AN OFFENSIVE THING TO GOD, SINFUL)
Proud (<- ZED = PROUD, INSOLENT, ARROGANT)
and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath. ('EBRAH = OVERFLOWING FURY OR ANGER THAT IS EXCESSIVE OR HAS GONE TOO FAR)."
10. The believer should understand that all promotion comes from God, not from his own inherent abilities: PSALM 75.4-7
deal not foolishly (HALAL = DO NOT BOAST OF YOURSELF):
and to the wicked (<- RASHA' = MORALLY WRONG, BAD, WICKED, UNRIGHTEOUS),
lift not up the horn: Lift not up your horn on high: speak (<- DABAR = COMMUNICATE, SPEAK, BOAST)
not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another."
11. The wise believer avoids praising himself: PROVERB 27.2
praise (HALAL = GLORIFY, BOAST ABOUT, SHINE ON)
thee, and not thine own mouth; (<- PEH - MOUTH, MEANS OF COMMUNICATION)
a stranger, and not thine own lips. (<- SAPHAH = SPEECH, DIALECT, LANGUAGE)".
12. The wise believer avoids proud or arrogant people: MARK 12.38-40
Beware (<- BLEPO = LOOK OUT FOR, KEEP GLANCING ABOUT FOR)
of the scribes (GRAMMATEUS = THE SCRIBES OR WRITERS, THOSE WHO COPIED LEGAL AND RELIGIOUS DOCUMENTS, SCHOLARS),
which love (<- THELO = WILL TO DO, DESIRE TO DO)
to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, And the chief seats in the synagogues (<- SUNAGOGE = MEETING PLACES OF THE RELIGIOUS, SIMILAR TO JEWISH CHURCH BUILDINGS, SEMINARIES),
and the uppermost rooms at feasts: Which devour widow's houses (<- OIKIA = THE WHOLE OF A PERSONS POSSESSIONS, HOUSE AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS, ALL THAT WAS LEFT BEHIND BY THE DECEASED HUSBAND FOR LEGAL FEES),
and for a pretense make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation (<- KRIMA = JUDGMENT, CONDEMNATION FROM GOD).(SEE ALSO LUKE 20.45-47)"
13. We should guard ourselves mentally from pride and it's devices: Romans 12.3, 16
given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think (<- PHRONEO - THE FUNCTION OF THE MIND IN REACHING A DECISION, EITHER GOOD OR BAD, AN ACTION OF THE WILL);
but to think soberly (<- SOPHRONEO = SOUNDLY, STABLE, IN THE RIGHT MIND OR WILL OF MIND),
according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith (PISTIS - FAITH, BELIEF).
Be of the same mind (<- PHRONEO = THE FUNCTION OF THE MIND IN REACHING A DECISION. DON'T BE TWO FACED, BY EXTENSION)
one toward another. Mind not high things, but condensend to men of low estate. Be not wise (<- PHRONIMOS = PRACTICALLY WISE IN RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS. DON'T MENTALLY LOOK DOWN ON OTHERS)
in your own conceits."
14. God often brings suffering on the believer to prevent pride from forming in him: 2 CORINTHIANS 12.1-7
