Gifts, Spiritual

Romans 12:6-8 " Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness."

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

Ephesians 4:11-12 "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:"

Gifts, A Breakdown Analysis Of The

Tongues, A Breakdown On The Spiritual Gift Of

There are few doctrines that cause hotter debate than that of the Spiritual Gifts, in particular the Gift of Tongues. Believers that have been exposed to the "operation of the Gift" in particular holiness denominations will argue to the end about it's veracity in the Church today. Other believers will have experienced what they believe is the gift of tongues in congregations that teach that the gift must be learned. As you study the scriptures you will find out that no spiritual gift can be earned, much less learned. Spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit as He decrees in the Church. Yet others believe that tongues is a special dispensational interface between God and man, allowing the user to possess and use a special type of prayer that sets him apart from other believers. As you study the scriptures you will find that there is no Biblical doctrine that even hints at a prayer tongue. Such a use of a spiritual gift builds up the individual believer, which is contrary to what God teaches tongues (as well as all the gifts) were given for. All gifts were given to build up the whole Church, not just individual members of that congregation. A Christian's foundation of faith must be "What saith the Scripture". The Scripture does not teach:

  1. My experience is the basis of Truth.
  2. The Baptism of the Spirit is evidenced by the phenomenon of speaking in tongues.
  3. Tongues are given to me as a personal prayer language.
  4. All believers have the ability to speak in tongues.
  5. Tongues are an angelic, heavenly language, not an earthly language.
  6. Tongues are a gift to be sought after above all other gifts.

If you can approach this study with the attitude of "what saith the Scripture", you will understand God's gift of tongues.
