(8) "Likewise must the deacons [diakonos (masculine): who renders helpful service, servant, helper, official in the church] be1grave[semnos(from semnous): of good character, honorable, worthy, respectable], not doubletongued [dilogos (Di=divided; Logos=word): not speaking a divided (divisive) word, of speaking one thing and meaning another, hypocritical, insincere, deceitful], not given [prosecho: to give attention to, to hold or cleave to; i.e., be addicted to] to much [polus: much, great, large] wine [oinos: of the juice of grapes usually fermented, wine], not greedy of filthy lucre[aischrokerdes
(Aischros=shameful, ugly, wicked; Kerdas=gain, advantage): disgraceful
gain in shady business or could be bribed, greedy for money]; (9) Holding[echo: as holding something, safely keep, preserve, have, hold, possess] the mystery [musterion: mystery (of something formerly unknown but now revealed), what was not known before as a supreme redemptive revelation of God through the Gospel of Christ] of the faith [pistis: faith, assurance, belief, conviction of the truth] in a pure [katharos: clean, pure, clear, innocent] conscience [suneidesis:

Klatos=called): blameless, unreproveable, that cannot be called into
to account, not accused for having done anything wrong]. (11) Even so must [hosautos: likewise, in like manner, after the same manner] their wives [gune: women, a wife] be grave [semnos (from semnas): of a person who calls forth veneration and respect from others, honorable, of good character, worthy of respect (used in secular Greek as "Worthy of respect as a god")], not slanderers [diabolos: devil, false accuser, prone to slander, given to malicious gossip], sober [nephalios: sober, temperate, abstaining from wine (either entirely or at least from its immoderate use)], faithful [pistos: faithful, trusty, can be relied upon, worthy of trust] in all things [pas:

(13) For they that have used the office of a deacon [diakoneo (masculine): who renders helpful service, servant, helper, official in the church] well [kalos: well, good, full well, very well, rightly, to speak well of] purchase to themselves [peripoieo (indicative mood implies certainty and reality): obtain, acquire, win, preserve for oneself, gain or acquire for oneself] a good[kalos: well, good, full well, very well, rightly, to speak well of] degree[bathmos: of a grade of dignity and wholesome influence in the church], and great[polus: many, much, great, large] boldness [parrhesia: boldness, confidence, assurance, free and fearless confidence] in their faith [pistis: faith, assurance, belief, conviction of the truth] which is in Christ Jesus."
1. Verse 8, Present Infinitive of the TO BE verb is used here; Lit., "Servants right now presently are to be worthy of respect...presently not indulging in much wine...presently the husband of one wife...etc." This allows for those who have stumbled in their Christian walk in the past to be restored to ministry when there has been a consistent Christian walk reestablished by them. 2. Verse 9 could read: "Clinging to the faith that previously wasn't revealed with a clean conscience." 3. Verse 10 could read: "Let them go through a period of examination; then let them serve as Servants if they are above called." |
