The Nation’s Conscience Still Smarts over Abortions

January 22, 1973 was the infamous day on which the United States Supreme Court handed down its decision now known as Row vs. Wade. In this one ruling, the highest court of our land struck down all state laws that unreservedly outlawed abortions. Abortion promoters believed that the day would come when the vast majority of Americans would uniformly agree that abortion was the right of any and every woman regardless of circumstances, just as, in modern times, the majority of Americans agree with civil rights for all racial minorities. However, those abortion activists were badly mistaken. After 30 years, the majority of Americans still believe abortion is wrong.

Early in March, the Rasmussen Reports polling organization made an amazing revelation: despite the fact that 61% of Americans know someone who has had an abortion, 55% still believe that abortion is morally wrong “most of the time.” Only 32% disagree with that opinion, leaving 13% non-committal on the issue. Another surprising statistic is that Americans below the age of 55 are more likely to believe abortion is wrong than their elders. 47% of Americans believe abortions are too easy to get and only 21 % believe they are too hard, leaving 21% believing the balance is about right.

As someone who firmly believes that abortion is murder, I am slightly tempted to be glad over these statistics, simply because it reveals that perhaps there is still some conscience that is left to be pricked in the hearts of the majority of Americans. However, it also reveals a great inconsistency, because polls continue to indicate that even though the majority of Americans believe abortion is wrong for themselves personally, the majority also supports the right of a woman to choose for herself whether or not she should destroy the baby within her own womb. Needless to say, the morality of the issue has nothing to do with the polls. Abortion would still be wrong even if 100% of us believed it was right. There is absolutely no way to get around the fact that human life starts at the point of conception, and there is absolutely no difference in the destruction of the human fetus in the womb and the murder of any child or adult. It is a lie from the pits of hell that causes some men and women to believe that the “fetus” is no more than a mass of tissue that can be “cut out” of the body like a surgeon would remove a cancer. As a result, it is now a statistical fact that the womb of an American mother is more dangerous than service in the United States armed forces. God help us.

Many Americans now believe that there is hope on the horizon. Two new Supreme Court justices have ascended to the nation’s highest bench, which have the general reputation for conservative decisions. It is thought by many that the possibility exists that Roe vs. Wade might be overturned. There are two states that are courageously working the system to rid our nation of abortion and are wasting little time about it. South Dakota has recently passed a law that bans all abortions, even pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. The provision makes no exceptions for a woman’s health, but it is reported that no prosecutions will occur based on abortions occurring for that reason. Before they even passed the law, South Dakota officials knew higher courts would strike it down, but sponsors hope through repeals that the US Supreme Court will use it as a vehicle to overturn their 1973 decision. Also, there are legislators in the State of Mississippi who are working to legally ban abortion. Although there is still some disagreement over the final provisions, state authorities hope to pass the measure into law in the near future. Let us hope and pray that the Supreme Court acts responsibly using at least one of these two states’ measures, as quickly as possible.

It is true that America remains inconsistent and hypocritical about their ideas regarding abortion. However, no matter what happens in the future, in our hearts, we will always know that abortion is wrong and it is murder. Have we, as a nation become so cold and calloused that we can no longer hear the cry of the tiny child for protection in its own mother’s womb? “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” (Psalm 127:3) Surely, the day will come when our nation will arise out of its ungodly stupor and realize that abortion is the murder of our nation’s most valuable resource, our own precious and beloved children.
