Wal-Mart Corporate Rolled Back the Wrong Way

It was unthinkable, but it finally happened. One of our most popular, most powerful, most trusted retailers in America, Wal-Mart, has aligned with the homosexual agenda. Last week, Wal-Mart, “came out of the closet,” and literally asked for permission to join the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Of course, the permission was immediately granted. The NGLCC is a leading promoter of homosexual marriage. Bobbie Patray, the President of Eagle Forum for Tennessee, remarked that “Sam Walton must be spinning in his grave.”

Evidently this came about because Wal-Mart was not “perceived” as being in touch with many of the liberal issues of our time. Wal-Mart had received much backlash from the radical far-left because its services were questioned as “affordable” to the American public. It was reported that Hillary Clinton resigned from the board of Wal-Mart, and turned down a 5000 dollar campaign contribution from the giant retailer. Perhaps because of this, Wal-Mart began, in their words, “making a very sincere effort to reach out to people who are a significant part of our customer base,” according to spokesman Bob McAdam. The question is what significant part of customer base is he referring to? The 5% of the American population that claim to be gay?

Now that Wal-Mart has made this unholy alliance, one of their vice presidents will sit on an advisory council to the NGLCC. This agency, which claims only to seek to enhance the business of gay and lesbian companies, has been involved in much more activity on the pro-gay agenda. The NGLCC has sought to influence legislation for child protection from sex offenders by the insertion of wording which designates perceived opposition to homosexuality as “hate crime.” They have also accused those of defending traditional marriage as “writing discrimination into the Constitution.” It is almost inconceivable that the owners of friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart stores as involved in anything so anti-biblical and unchristian.

According to the American Family Association, Wal-Mart has never kept homosexuals from being employees, suppliers, or customers in any form, which seems reasonable enough. However, since they are now a corporate member of the NGLCC they will contribute $25,000 and pay for two conferences scheduled for the pro-homosexual agenda. Also, AFA reports that homosexual-owned businesses will be give special treatment when making purchases, showing less preferential treatment to non-homosexual owned businesses.

There is no doubt that this will be a source of major concern and grief for dedicated Christians in the foreseeable future. There is probably not a single family in Tennessee that has never shopped in a Wal-Mart store. Most families, if not individuals themselves, are represented in Wal-Mart stores as customers on a weekly basis. Most of us probably can’t conceive of living in such a way that we would never trade at the retail giant. I feel sure that is exactly what the current owners of Wal-Mart believe, that we simply cannot live without them. However, the imposition of a boycott is not a simple as it may sound.

The problem is Wal-Mart stores are local. The employees and even the managers are friends of ours, and even members of our own families. Perhaps most of the local management and employees disagree with the direction that corporate leadership has taken on this issue. However, they have to make a living, as do we all. On the other hand, we must do something to tell the corporate owners of Wal-Mart that their newly announced direction is wrong and evil in the sight of grassroots American citizens.

The Family Research Council of Washington and the American Family Association has joined forces and has begun to urge Wal-Mart customers to do three things: (1) Ask to speak to local Wal-Mart management and politely share that they are customers and they appreciate Wal-Mart’s services. Tell the manager that Wal-Mart has gone in the wrong direction and they are placing Tennessee’s marriage amendment in jeopardy. Encourage them to speak to upper management and express customers’ displeasure about this. (2) Call Wal-Mart chairman Rob Walton at (479) 273-4000 and let him know your concerns, and be polite. (3) Send an email to Rob Walton using the AFA web site at www.afa.net. Finally, tell others about this and encourage them to perform the above actions. We must take a stand against the outrageous evils of our day, or else they will consume us. “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” (I Corinthians 6:9,10 NASB)
