A FAITH, A SON, A SACRIFICE

Genesis 22:1-19

“God’s purpose in the world is both redemptive and missionary.”

1. A FATHER’S FAITH

-Abraham’s Response – “Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey”(v. 3).

-Truth to apply: Obedience begets obedience.

“So Abraham left as the LORD had told him . . .”(Ch. 12:4).

-Abraham’s Reply – “Abraham answered, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt-offering my son”Ch. 22:8).

-Abraham’s Readiness – “Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son”(Ch. 22:10)

2. A SON’S SUBMISSION

-Isaac Observes – As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’

‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’”(Ch. 22:7).

-Isaac Obeys – “When they reached the place God had told them about, Abraham built and altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood”(Ch. 22:9).

3. A SACRIFICE THAT SAVES

-A Ram Provided – “Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son”(Ch. 22:13)

-A Ransom Paid – God spared Abraham’s son, but not His own. It was on another mountain; a hill called Calvary that God answered Isaac’s question, “Where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” He answered Isaac’s question many years later in the words of John the Baptist, as he was baptizing in the river of Jordan. “Look, the Lamb of God,” he said, “who takes away the sins of the world”(John 1:29).

Thus a sacrifice that saves, can be seen in the God who PROVIDES. “So Abraham called that place: The LORD Will Provide (Jehovah Jireh.” The place we remember is a place called Calvary. The place where God provided a sacrifice that saves. The question for us to consider is this—What did God, the Father, provide for us in Jesus?

P – Jesus PAID the PENALTY for our sin.

R – Jesus RESTORED our RELATIONSHIP with The Father.

O – Jesus was OBEDIENT unto death even death on a Cross. The Bible says, “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross”(Philippians 2:8).

V - Jesus suffered VICARIOUSLY for me on The Cross.

I – Jesus IS the way to the Father.

D – Jesus DIED for me.

E - Jesus offers the gift of ETERNAL life.

JEHOVAH Jireh – HIS GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
